Nothing But The Same
04:29
|
|||
army coats, phonographs, a new found taste for prose
an admiration for Kerouac and Henry David Thoreau
it's funny how, with each semester passed, you found a different you
you found a different mask
to hide behind and convince yourself
that your small old town
with its small old name
had transformed unto itself and would never look the same
a vacant house, some clothes to pack, a tray of cigarettes
a ticket to compliment your new mindset
i guess I should've known all the signs had shown that you'd set out for your own
but you had advice to loan
in a letter you scraped out for me
and it read
go see New York
i hear they're living there
you better figure it out cuz you're heading for nowhere
winter came twice as fast and we were on our own
a binary separation (two time zones)
we said we didn't care "a chance for open air" but no good was felt neither here nor there
and I began to feel like a stranger
in my small old town
with its small old name
that transformed unto itself and would never look the same
and i hear out west
you're called a different name
but deep down under the rest, you know we're nothing but the same
we're nothing but the same

Hourglass
04:21
|
|||
slipping time of your fingers wrapped in mine
and what we have is in a hourglass
and then truth knocks at the door like a wave crashed on the shore
with no regrets, turn away
and think of me in 20 years with honesty and sincerity
hold on to those thoughts on those sleepless nights
hold on to the grip when I hold you tight
hold on to the things that we shouldn't do
i knew it, did you know it too?

The Architect
03:21
|
|||
midnight call, (he was gone) you were 16
you were still trying to get a hold on what was there and what he did to you
but the truth is, you were the architect that laid the cornerstone that keeps this building up standing up, preventing me from ever falling down
weekend days and Friday nights were always better when you were sitting by my side in my parent's house with your favorite records on
or when you sat in the shotgun of my car and watched the sun go down we crossed that border speeding up when our time was ever winding down
and you sing

The Night
03:42
|
|||
flashing lights on the interstate
these sensations can never wait
racing now in Daddy's car
the faster we go, the safer we are
and in her mind there was a civil war
she needed to learn what her body was for
searching for a greater sign
she said "slide your mouth right onto mine"
losing balance in the park
they like it better out in the dark
with no conception of what is wrong or right,
they are the people who worship the night

Back to You
03:36
|
|||
i remember the first time that we talked
stars were in my eyes as we walked
and i remember the first time that I knew how much I truly thought of you why we gotta be so serious? it doesn't have to be mapped out for us
i saw your face out from the crowd (you talk too loud)
and the love was true
when I look in the mirror,
all I see is you
i learned the hard way
i paid my dues
and we saw other people
but i came back to you
i think someone sent you from above
i can't tell what you're thinking of
you're twisting me like an allen screw this is all way too good to be true
and i remember the first time that we kissed
our hearts were full of innocence
you heard me sing out from the crowd (I sing too loud)
and the love was true
when I look in the mirror,
all I see is you
i learned the hard way
i paid my dues
and we saw other people
but i came back to you
i remember the first time that we talked
stars were in my eyes as we walked
i remember the first time that I knew how much I truly thought of you why we gotta be so serious? it doesn't have to be mapped out for us
you heard me sing out to the crowd (you were so proud)
and the love was true
when I look in the mirror,
all I see is you
i learned the hard way
i paid my dues
and we saw other people
but i came back to you

Aug. 3
04:25
|
|||
august rain paired with a dial tone
the witching hour brings a new alone
to a Levitt house in a suburban town
an empty room, a man breaking down
we're playing the same songs over and again
maybe this will comfort me
they say it gets better when the sun rises again
but why wait for something I'll never see?
because when time starts slowing down
and my ears they drown the sounds
i can hear your voice
it's calling back at me
it's always darkest before the dawn
in the walls of your stadium

The Turner Thesis
03:09
|
|||
long hair and red eyes
the night had grown old
the tide moved in slowly
our feet felt the cold
a moon waned above us
this story's been told
so what's worth delaying the inevitable?
freeways, headlights "home is wherever you go"
weeks in hindsight: on impulse, our lives were postponed
and at one point expanding, this frontier once carved the unknown
lights are dimming parallel through linear time
"well at least you're not alone"
